THE LAW OF MOSES
Lesson: II Cor 3:6 - 11 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
II Cor 3:7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was done away;
II Cor 3:8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
II Cor 3:9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
II Cor 3:10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
II Cor 3:11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
The plan of salvation has never changed. God has always saved man by grace through faith,
(Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.) but He has changed His methods of dealing with man and He has changed the people through whom He reaches the lost. When He changed His people, (turning to the gentiles through the church, because of the disobedience of Israel) he changed the rules or laws which governed them.
I. The Law of Moses
A. It was from God. Lev. 26:46
Lev 26:46 These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
B. It came through Moses.
John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
C. It was given to Israel as a nation
Lev 26:46 These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
Psa 78:5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children
D. The purpose of the Law
1. To provide civil government to God's chosen nation
Deu 17:9 And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and inquire; and they shall show thee the sentence of judgment:
Deu 17:10 And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they of that place which the LORD shall choose shall show thee; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee:
Deu 17:11 According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall show thee, to the right hand, nor to the left.
Acts 24:5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
Acts 24:6 Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.
Acts 24:7 But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,
Acts 24:8 Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him. (laws of one nation are not applicable in another)
2. Added because of transgression
Gal 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. .
3. It was a schoolmaster
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.Gal 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster..
4. It could not bring righteousness
Heb 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
5. It served as a mouth-stopper
Rom 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.(showed them their transgressions)
6. None ever justified by the law
Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Rom 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Rom 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Rom 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
II The duration of the law
1. It was to last till fulfilled
Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
2. Until John
Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
3. Till the promised seed should come.
Gal 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
4. Christ fulfilled and blotted it out on the cross.
Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Col 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Col 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ..
III What about those who try to keep the law today?
1. Debtor to do the whole law!
Gal 5:3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
Gal 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
Gal 5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them..
2. To offend in one point makes one guilty of it all.
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
3. To try to keep the law in order to be saved is to reject Christ who kept it for us.
Gal 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Christ kept it completely,
Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. yet He paid the penalty for us who were guilty of it;
Gal 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Gal 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
and now since we are dead and our lives are hid with Christ in God
Col 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God
The law CANNOT touch us!
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
